A Chilly but Rewarding Dive at Loch Fyne

There’s something special about diving on Scotland’s west coast, and a recent trip to Loch Fyne was a perfect reminder of why it’s so loved by cold-water divers.

Suzy, Torsten, Les and Mark started with cautious optimism—the sun made a valiant effort to break through the clouds, teasing us with the promise of warmth. Unfortunately, it never quite committed, and the water temperature made sure we knew exactly where we were. Still, drysuits on and spirits high, we headed in.

A First Encounter to Remember

The highlight of the dive came in the form of a truly special sighting: my very first highland dancer nudibranch. Delicate, intricate, and unmistakably elegant, it was every bit as captivating as I’d hoped. Even better, it had laid a beautiful spiral ribbon of eggs nearby—an intricate, almost artistic display that added an extra layer of magic to the moment.

Sadly, there was no “dance” performance this time, but that just gives me a reason to come back and look again.

A Classic West Coast Cast

Beyond the nudibranch, the dive delivered a fantastic variety of marine life. A squat lobster scuttled across the seabed, while a much larger lobster kept itself well-hidden within a rocky crevice—only just visible if you took the time to look carefully.

Shrimp darted in and out of view, and the seabed was dotted with gobies, each one full of character despite their small size. A few small wrasse added flashes of colour against the more muted tones of rock and kelp, and everywhere you looked there were crabs—some familiar, others a little more unusual, all fascinating in their own way.

Cold Water, Rich Rewards

There’s no denying it was a cold dive. Even with the right kit, you feel it. But that’s part of what makes diving here so rewarding—the challenge is balanced by the sheer richness of life.

Loch Fyne may not offer tropical temperatures or coral reefs, but it more than makes up for it with character, diversity, and those unexpected moments that stay with you long after you’ve surfaced.

Cold, yes—but absolutely worth it!!
